About Ayurveda


Ayurveda is the healing art and science of using herbs, yoga, meditation, and massage to bring health when it has been compromised. Ayurveda – literally “knowledge/veda of life/ayur"--also offers practices based on rejuvenating individuals with techniques such as intermittent fasting (on a monodiet, or customized restricted diet), and using rasayanas, or tonics to facilitate renewal of body and mind. The main principle of Ayurveda is to balance the individual’s daily life in harmony with the energies of the day and night, and to help individuals remain in harmony with the parade of the seasonal cycle.

Charaka is the ancient physician whose texts are still read and studied by scholars and ayurvedic practitioners and doctors. Charaka and Patanjali (the father of yoga) are sometimes said to be incarnations of the same soul. B.K.S. Iyengar is believed by many to be a modern incarnation of Patanjali. Bri Maya Tiwari (Swamini Maya Ma) and Dr. Vasant Lad are believed by many to be modern incarnations of Charaka. We are so fortunate, at this time of planetary crisis, to be living with such wisdom around us.
